To some it appears racy. To others, gawky. About the only thing it doesn't do is fail to attract attention.
As a porky, old-fart, first impressions imparted by the English-built Civic "racer" did nothing to endear. The sports seats are unforgiving, especially getting in or out, the ride is dray-like and the modern cabin layout almost instantly inspires love or hate.
After a short initial drive, I was one of the many who thought the R was a load of hype. After a week with the car, I have changed my mind. This is a seriously quick little car which goes far harder than anything with a naturally aspirated two-litre four-cylinder engine has a right to.
Certainly there are things about the R which have remained constant. The relatively narrow seats, with stiff bolsters, are still uncomfortable if you have anything other than a guitar player's anorexic body. Getting in and out, as the bolster cuts into your thigh, is not relaxing.
